Empowering Minds: Paula Gonzalez Champions Mental Wellness for Black and Brown Communities at Rutgers University

TPMF Clinical Coordinator Paula Gonzalez speaks to students of Rutgers Medical School

On Friday, July 12th, Paula Gonzalez, the Executive Clinical Director for The Preventive Measures Foundation, was invited to present at Rutgers University Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE). Her presentation, "FINDING STRENGTH WITHIN: Cultivating Mental Wellness in Black and Brown Communities," highlighted key discussion points such as self-care, building resilience, and creating supportive environments.

Paula's presentation delved into the nuances between mental distress and mental illness, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health challenges within Black and Brown communities. She discussed the stigmas these communities face, such as the strong cultural expectation to appear resilient and the historical mistrust of mental health systems. Paula's insights were not just theoretical but rooted in practical strategies for overcoming these barriers.

Mental distress vs. Mental Illness

One of the standout aspects of her presentation was the emphasis on building resilience. Paula shared strategies like developing a supportive network, practicing positive thinking, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Her approach was holistic, integrating physical, emotional, and psychological self-care practices.

Paula's leadership at The Preventive Measures Foundation is instrumental in driving the organization's mission forward. Under her guidance, the Foundation has continued to develop programs and initiatives that address mental health disparities. Her thought leadership ensures that the Foundation remains at the forefront of promoting mental wellness in underserved communities.

Self-Care and Wellbeing

The Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE) promotes academic and medical excellence within the Hispanic community. Established in 1991, HCOE enhances academic performance for Latinos and underserved individuals, boosts faculty recruitment and retention, and fosters cultural competence among healthcare providers. Supported by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grants, HCOE addresses healthcare disparities and improves access to culturally competent care. Programs like the one Paula Gonzalez presented are vital in preparing future healthcare providers to deliver culturally sensitive care.

By providing actionable strategies, Paula Gonzalez not only empowers individuals but also strengthens communities. Her work exemplifies the transformative impact that dedicated leaders can have in promoting mental health awareness and breaking down stigmas.  For more insights on mental wellness and the efforts of The Preventive Measures Foundation, THEPMFOUNDATION.ORG
