Community Support Workers (CSWs) play a crucial role in providing counseling and support that can significantly change lives. Research shows that Community Health Workers, including CSWs, are essential in addressing mental health concerns, especially in underserved communities. One study highlights that individuals living below the poverty level are 2.5 times more likely to experience depression compared to those above the poverty line (MHP Salud). Having CSWs in these communities provide much-needed mental health support and resources that changes lives.
The CSW program at 2124 MLK Dr. SE is the home of champions that service the community in the way MLK himself would be most proud. Meet Sylvie Tanyi, our dedicated Community Support Worker (CSW) at PM’s Washington, DC office. Sylvie's motivation to become a CSW stems from her deep desire to help others and create a positive impact on their lives. Her journey is proof of the power of compassion and resilience.
Sylvie’s daily routine reflects her commitment: starting her day with home visits, follow-up calls, and team meetings, followed by client advocacy and community outreach. Her active listening, cultural sensitivity, and friendly approach make her a perfect fit to get the job done sympathetically and efficiently. She recalls a memorable outreach day when she connected with a single mother of three battling severe depression and anxiety. The mother had recently lost her job and faced eviction. Sylvie's empathetic and non-judgmental approach made the mother feel heard and understood. Sylvie quickly mobilized resources, connecting her with a local food bank and securing emergency financial assistance. She also arranged therapy and medication management through Preventive Measures.
Over the following months, Sylvie's support extended to helping the mother apply for job training programs and childcare assistance. With Sylvie’s encouragement, the mother joined a support group for single mothers, building a network of friends who understood her struggles. A year later, the mother had a stable job, a better apartment, and significantly improved mental health. What an amazing success story!
With people like Sylvie on the PM team, the DC community has a dedicated champion who brings hope, transformation, and a brighter future to those who need it the most proving CSWs help bridge the gap between affected individuals and available resources.
Their work in reducing stigma and facilitating access to care is vital for improving mental health outcomes and have been shown to increase the likelihood of obtaining primary care and improve mental health outcomes in high-poverty and underserved areas (ASTHO) (NIHCM). Sylvie Tanyi’s work exemplifies the impact of community support and the importance of helping others navigate their most challenging times.
